Wait, Sci-Fi is real now?

To the wonderful readers of this blog:

I'm not sure what rock you've been sleeping under, but Sci-fi is real now. Has anyone told you yet? The threshold of technological innovation has been crossed. Autonomous Robo-taxis. Thinking Machines. The whole suite of 1980's pulp sci-fi ideas are officially real now.

YES, IT IS WEIRD.

We've watched this pattern of acceleration for a little while now, and it just keeps getting stranger. There is no way around it. We just have to deal with it I suppose!

Okay, let's focus. What are we talking about here? How is everything sci-fi now?

An easy example:

Humanoid robots are beginning to step off their conveyor belts in bigger numbers. Okay... so what's next? Now comes the part where companies start figuring out how to deploy their robots into the workforce. Then those robots all update and get smarter. Each year, they will be capable of doing more complex jobs. Maybe the actuators in their hands will make progress, for instance, and they'll have even finer motor skills to open all sorts of jars of jelly. So, if you open jelly jars for a living, look out.

Weird Tech Headlines:

Without getting into specifics, tech news headlines are completely cyberpunk now. One headline will be something like, "new computer chip accesses quantum parallel realities". I see headlines like that and I think ... okay, I'm not even sure if I believe what I'm reading...

I guess regular people can pick up audio books about physics or tech, and sit around contemplating Schrodinger's Cat and the multiverse, but I'm beginning to wonder if the idea of staying informed is becoming less plausible as time goes by. Perhaps the wiser path is to watch short reels full of whatever brain-rot the algorithm has in store of us. Because trying to understand what technological humanity is actually going through right now might just require a little bit too much brain power.

So, What are my thoughts?

My own sci-fi writing can barely keep up with the technology of today at this point. I used to think I'd try to imagine lots of near-term future sci-fi technologies, but now a lot of that stuff is already invented and in use so it isn't science fiction any longer.

So, in a sense, I've stopped trying to compete with reality. We live in a sci-fi world now, and that's the way it is. I can't predict the future and I don't control the way things are, but I can comment on it... and here's my conclusion. It's weird. Tech used to be cool, and now it's just weird.

With my own science fiction project, The Crystalline Mythos, I find myself focused more on creative style and less on realistic prediction making. I do sometimes think about critiquing tech and corporations a little bit, but mostly in a light cheeky way. Mostly, I'm just trying to make my books fun, interesting, colorful, and consistent. At least I can keep the role of tech in my stories imaginative, even if a lot of it isn't really that futuristic anymore.

To give a brief update on the project, I made some small updates to my paperback book, which now includes even more art.

Dream Operations Vol. 1 looks really good in paperback, and getting a book is probably the best way to get into the project.

As for the second volume of Dream Operations stories, I'm making progress! Five of the nine new short are completed and published as ebooks already. When the last for short stories are ready, I'll let everyone know, and prepare the release of Volume 2.

In the meantime, check out a few of the new short stories HERE:

Like I said, the first five stories are complete, so you can find them on Amazon... along with the nine short story ebooks from Dream Operations Vol. 1

I'll finish by saying that I'm going to keep working on the next few stories and try to get them out in a reasonable amount of time. I really appreciate each person who has taken the time to look at my art and writing.
